“Are you a Mum?”

I’ve been spending the last few weeks working in a Primary School and the best thing about it (besides spending playtimes in an imaginary jail) are the things the kids come out with. Last week, a 5year old told me her Grandma lived in an envelope ( I really hope she meant a bungalow) and one naughty little boy said that he “didn’t smash the doll’s house, the bat I was playing with did” (clever)! But something a little girl said to me yesterday wins this week.

My Mum also works in this school and I accidentally referred to her as “Mum” instead of “Mrs Brannan”. This little girl asked me if she really was my Mum. Then she asked me if I was a Mum. I told her I wasn’t, to which she asked (looking rather bemused), “Well…when ARE you going to be a Mum?!”

Like it was the most ridiculous thing that I’m not a Mum! Had an adult or an older child asked someone this question it could be a little offensive, depending on who they were asking. I mean it’s a pretty personal question, I just love how kids aren’t aware of that. At what point do we learn to draw the line and figure out what not to say?
